How Did We Get Into This Mess

If you were to meet ten different people today and ask them each about there stance on health and nutrition you would probably get about ten different answers.  It's no wonder why a lot of people these days are confused.  One minute the news is telling us that certain foods are great for us and we should be consuming them in abundance, the next minute there condemning those very same foods.  Year after year a new "diet" book is released and someone gets rich in a hurry and then fades aways, probably off to some Caribbean island with boat loads of money, all because their theory was intriguing at first glance but didn't hold true over the long term.

It's a constant battle everyday between those who get it versus those who don't and it's hard to point the finger in any certain direction because there are many people to blame.  Look at the "recommended" food pyramid by the USDA which for the longest time was a tool that was looked upon as a way to eat healthy and understand which food groups to eat.  Now, the USDA comes out with the new and improved pyramid which is not a pyramid at all but rather a plate divided into portions of specific food groups.   In order for us to realize the magnitude of the ass-backward thinking that we Paleo goers are constantly battling with, we must take a direct quote from the kidshealth.org website -

"And just like the pyramid where stripes were different widths, the plate has been divided so that the grain section is bigger than the protein section. Why? Because nutrition experts recommend you eat more vegetables than fruit and more grains than protein foods."

This is just mind boggling.  I mean come on, who's running this ship?  The recommendations over the last 40+ years have lead us around in circles chasing our tails only to be left with an obesity epidemic that continues to worsen every year.  It's definitely time for us to realize that we should be looking out for ourselves and not trusting the government to provide proper health and nutrition information.  Who's got our back when it comes to providing unbiased information and medical studies?

Before we wrap this up let me just state that I am by no means a pioneer in the Paleo world at all.  I've had the great fortune of studying the works of some very intelligent individuals but more importantly, I've seen the difference first hand between eating Paleo/Primal and eating "realatively healthy." I can say I've been my own lab rat and the results aren't even close.
