The insurance issue in this country is definitely a hot topic for debate. I'll save that discussion for someone who enjoys speaking about it. What I am concerned about is the way we as humans think about health and medicine.
From the time we are very little we've been taught that if we get sick we go to the doctor's and they make us better. Or, if we are not feeling well, we just need to take a little pill and we'll be all set. We always stress the importance of having medical insurance coverage making our doctor's appointments but do we ever put that much focus on our habits and the foods we eat on a daily basis?
Don't get me wrong, one of the main reasons our human species has been able to live as long as we currently do is because of the advances in modern medicine and surgical procedures. Things happen sometimes beyond our control that warrant a trip to the emergency room or family doctor but for the most part we don't pay much attention to the day to day things that may be affecting our current state of health. We don't pay much attention to it because if we feel ok then we're not concerned. Out of sight, out of mind.
It's very interesting that everything is starting to come to a head, with the rising obesity statistics and current debacle of the medical insurance situation here, I wondered what might happen if we started to put more emphasis on the foods that we eat along with our daily patterns of sleep, exercise, etc. Would we see a shift in the number of doctors visits each year? Maybe the gang at Harvard Medical can put together a trial and get back to us in 10 years. Anyhow, one thing is clear, that the majority of people living in the United States share the same viewpoint when it comes to a "healthy" diet, which is a confused and misguided one.
Hopefully little by little we can start to change the conventional way of thinking.
