I found it a little strange that this idea came into my head on Easter Sunday, but decided to run with it anyway. There are some things that are considered tradition like Easter and there are other things that have been mistaken as traditions but have become habits among most restaurants. So what am I referring to that needs to be broken?
This should be easy for most Paleo-goers, but for newcomers or others it's a constant obstacle every time they go out to eat. Bread. Going out to eat is something very enjoyable for most, but it's also a difficult thing for many health conscious people out there. So why is it, that as soon as you sit down at a restaurant, they are so quick to come over with a basket of bread? Maybe it's because it's cheap, or maybe it's because we've become creatures of habit that will eat anything you put in in front of us when we're hungry. Whatever the case is, I've found that it's better to refuse the bread altogether and lean on the, out-of-sight, out-of-mind theory.
Will we ever see the day where when you sit down at a restaurant and they bring you something other than "fresh" bread? Maybe a few slices of apple or a bowl of blueberries to share for the table? Is this such a noble idea? You would think this would make sense considering the digestion rates of fruit compared to other carbohydrates and proteins that you may be ingesting later on in the meal. I guess for now, we'll continue to fight the good fight of trying to bring our paleo lifestyle to a dominant position in a conventional world.
