Why is Food so Personal?

It's a question that we've been debating over the last few weeks.  Food is personal for a number of reasons. Many of them are probably too in depth to cover in a blog post but one of the main ones has to be because food choices ignite judgments. Nobody likes to be judged about anything that they do but when it comes to choices we make 3 or 4 times a day about our food, it becomes personal. "Why are you drinking diet cola?" "Eating that will clog your arteries" etc. etc.

We get defensive about those judgements and feel the need to word vomit reasons or excuses for why we ate what we ate. Everyone knows someone who goes to great lengths to make any type of excuse for what they're about to eat or why they're eating what they're eating. It usually goes something like:

- I don't have enough time to eat healthy
- My family doesn't cook that way so it's too hard
- It's too expensive
- I eat out a lot
- I'm not good at making healthy meals
- I had a tough week and deserve it

These excuses are just scratching the surface. If you find you fall into the category of people making these excuses you may overlook the way a friend or family member makes these situations even worse by empowering or supporting your bad decisions and habits by agreeing with you! Ask most people who sought out on the quest for personal health and they'll tell you that it felt lonely at times, almost impossible and that they didn't go through the journey with a "buddy system" to support them.

Food has the ability to hold as much peer pressure power or more as drugs do.  We've known for quite some time that the chemicals released as a result of eating specific foods can cause addictive type behaviors which is probably why trying to eat healthy is almost as difficult as trying to get someone clean and sober.  It's a battle everyday but WE are here for that very reason, to contribute to helping people change the way they think about food and provide high quality convenient snacks to help fuel the journey. You are not alone. (even MJ says so)
