The 2011 NYC Barefoot run was a great event to be a part of. We enjoyed meeting new people, seeing a growing community freely express themselves and learning from some of the masters in attendance. For those who are unfamiliar with barefoot running, it's more involved than just kicking off your shoes and heading out the door for a run.
There were a lot of very intelligent people that were gathered together in one room last night to kick things off at the Barefoot pre-run party in the South Street Seaport. It was here that the speakers addressed things like how they got started, executing proper running form and where they see this movement heading. Some of the familiar names in attendance include - John Durant, Christopher McDougall, Barefoot Ted, Erwan Le Corre and Barefoot Ken Bob. There were also a handful of interesting presenters who we were glad to have gotten the chance to be introduced to.
We really enjoyed talking to some of the runners about our product and explaining the benefits of going Grain-Free. There are many similarities between the Paleo/Primal communities and the barefoot running community. Both embrace the minimalist idea and enjoy the notion of trying to figure out how we can go backward, in a sense. Also, moving forward both communities will continue to face opposition from "conventional" wisdom.
One of the greatest parts of the weekend was definitely spending time in New York City and enjoying the beautiful views of Governor's Island where the run took place.
All in all the weekend went great and we were very thankful to be a part of it. Many thanks to John and Maggie Durant for putting this wonderful event together. Check out our Facebook page for more photos of this weekend
